MOVIES FROM 10 DIFFERENT GENRES THAT YOU MUST WATCH

MOVIES FROM 10 DIFFERENT GENRES THAT YOU MUST WATCH

Every average movie watcher hits a time when they realize that they are getting bored of watching the same type of movies with the same old tropes and themes. Personally, as a superhero fan, I too underwent the ‘superhero fatigue’. And in that period of time, I took the courtesy of trying out different genres and exploring the vast land of Hollywood. So here are the 10 popular movie genres and a film from that genre that you will like despite not being a fan of that particular genre. Even if you are more of a rom-com person, this article will suggest you an action movie that you will definitely like. These films are so good that despite not being your type, you will surely enjoy them. Read on!

1.            Action – Commando (1985)

When you have Arnold Schwarzenegger in an action movie, there is very little chance that it is going to be a flop. John Matrix, an ex-black ops commando lives a peaceful and quiet life with his daughter. However, when she is kidnapped by some dangerous people, he must set out on a mission and race against time to save her from the clutches of death.

I am terribly distraught over the fact that this movie was only 1 hour and 30 minutes long. It enchants your mind so well that the short runtime doesn’t actually feel short. In fact, it manages to exceed your expectations regardless of its runtime. I can guarantee you that no matter what kind of movies you like, Commando is an action movie that deserves your attention.

2.            Horror – The Sixth Sense (1999)

Now this is a genre that only appeals to a certain audience. You either like horror movies or you don’t. There is no in between. Yet, this masterpiece by M. Night Shyamalan breaks that boundary. It doesn’t matter whether you are afraid of ghosts or not, The Sixth Sense is the kind of movie that will make you feel really displeased if you leave it in between because you are too scared. It is the kind of film that you have to watch, start to end otherwise you won’t ever know the true meaning behind Cole’s issues (the protagonist).

And also, it is not your usual scary movie that relies on jump scares and evil looking monsters and ghosts. Sure, there are some scenes which will frighten you; but if you actually do sit and watch the movie entirely, then at the end, you feel a sense of calmness washing over you knowing that the movie has a good ending. And then again, who can deny the absolutely mind-bending plot twists by Shyamalan?

3.            Comedy – Johnny English (2003)

Probably one of the best comedy movies I have ever watched. What is better than seeing our all-time favourite Mr. Bean actor, Rowan Atkinson playing the role of a spy? Originally supposed to be a James Bond rip off, this movie actually surpasses some of the Bond movies. It is one of those kind of comedy movies that do not just rely on slapstick comedy, but rather genuine comedy which makes you laugh dearly. For all the stern people out there, who hate physical comedy, this is a film that is bound to make you lose your minds. Johnny English is a movie that has an incredibly talented actor as its protagonist and an incredibly despicable villain played, again, by a superb actor. The delivery is spot on and the casting is perfect. Be sure to watch it with some napkins and tissue papers to wipe off the tears of laughter that will erupt.

4.            Science Fiction – Avatar (2009)

The problem with science fiction is that it is not everyone’s cup of tea. You don’t necessarily have to be a science fanatic to enjoy sci fi, but rather you must have an extra-ordinary imagination and a penchant for the impossible. Avatar checks all of the above boxes and more. It is not just a family-friendly movie but also a very engrossing film that keeps you hooked to the seat because it is so amazing. One can guarantee that at the end, you yourself will want to live on the world of Pandora. In fact, when Avatar was released there were a lot of people who actually underwent depression in accordance of the fact that they could not live in the beautiful world of Pandora.

Later on, so many people experienced this phenomenon, that it was labelled as Post Avatar Depression Syndrome. Such is the world-building ability of James Cameron. For those times, the CGI was done beautifully and everything felt very real. It was also the highest grossing film of all time until Avengers Endgame released 10 years later. Avatar is definitely a science fiction film that is enjoyed by all.

5.            Crime – Ocean’s 11 (2001)

I have never seen any heist movie which is better than the Ocean’s franchise. It is just perfect. The casting, the direction, the music, the story, the dialogues, the pacing, everything was flawless. I personally feel that the sequel, Ocean’s 12 was better but let’s just say that each and every movie of this franchise was downright brought to perfection. It is a rare mix of crime and comedy that is absolutely fantastic from start to end. And I haven’t even told you about its star-studded cast yet. Goerge Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle, etc. It is originally a remake of the 1960 film of the same name. Ocean’s eleven is a franchise that has spawned two sequels and one all-female led spin off and another prequel currently in production. This is a movie that is criminally underrated (pun intended).

6.            Romance – Forrest Gump (1994)

I know I say this every single time but believe me when I say that this is not just the best romantic movie but also one of the greatest movies ever made. Originally adapted from the book of the same name, this movie went on to win countless awards for its many attributes. Tom Hanks, the lead actor who played Forrest Gump himself won Best Actor Oscar. And his efforts really show in the movie.

The story of Forrest Gump is admirable and so is the direction. The little things that the protagonist does, the way he struggles to understand the complex world his fellow humans have created and his relationship with his friend Jenny, all of it is encapsulated so well that it grows on you. Forrest Gump is definitely one of the most lovable and heartbreaking Romance movies produced by Hollywood.

7.            Mystery – Memento (2000)

How can one complete any list of movies sorted by genres without mentioning Christopher Nolan?

Memento was Mr. Nolan’s first successful and recognized movie. The essence of a mystery movie is when the film progresses from the point of view of the protagonist and slowly, the secrets are revealed to the audience bit by bit. Memento is that kind of a mystery thriller that is a little difficult to keep up with. And since it is directed by Christopher Nolan, it uses non linear storytelling. Although these are one of the few Nolan films that you do not need to rewatch to understand it. As time progresses, the sheer horror and epic realization hits you and you are left baffled at the end.

Even if you are a person that doesn’t like to use their brain to decipher what a movie is trying to tell you, you will be hooked. Memento beautifully portrays the events that unfold with a man named Leonard Shelby who has retrograde amnesia and is trying to find a killer. This film should definitely be your top choice for a good mystery movie.

8.            Fantasy – Harry Potter movies

If you live on Earth then you must have definitely heard about Harry Potter. To sum it all up, Harry Potter is the story of a boy who discovers he is a wizard and goes to a school named Hogwarts all the while trying to defend himself against his greatest enemy, Voldemort.

Once you start with one movie, you cannot stop. If you haven’t already watched this series, then you are definitely missing something from life. Whatever genre you like, Potterverse has it all. You will also grow to love each and every character as there is such a diversity that somewhere you will find something relatable. After watching all the Harry Potter movies, it only makes me wish that the Wizarding World should have existed.

I won’t write anything more about it since if I start pouring my heart out, I wouldn’t be able to stop. There are enough articles on the internet and enough people in the world to convince you that Harry Potter is the best piece of fiction to ever exist.

9.            Drama – The Social Network (2010)

David Fincher never fails to impress and neither does Mark Zuckerberg. So, what do you get when you fuse both of them together? The Social Network. A historical drama movie that revolves around the early days of Mark Zuckerberg and his journey towards creating Facebook, the famous social media app.

You might be thinking that since this is a movie about the CEO of Facebook, he might be the protagonist. But that is not the case. The tagline of this movie tells us everything – ‘You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies’. And that is basically what it is about. This is one of those few films that you would generally overlook since it is a biography of sorts. But do not make that mistake. The Social Network is a gripping and intense emotional movie that will bring you to the edge of your seats at certain moments. Andrew Garfield did not win an Oscar for nothing!

10.   Adventure – National Treasure (2004)

Nicolas Cage is a national treasure and so is his movie. There is nothing about this movie that you will hate. It is quirky, funny, amusing and an adventurous and thrilling experience. It is a family-friendly movie that you would generally watch just to have some entertainment in life.

It is the kind of treasure hunt movie where you can gladly hand over the thinking and deciphering part to the characters and just sit back, relax and enjoy. The good part about this movie is that in no way is the world ending or there are any situations of life or death. It is a genuine effort made by Disney that is worth every minute of your time.

So, folks that was it. All of the above-mentioned movies were handpicked by me to cater to all types of audiences regardless of your likes and dislikes. Hope it was worth your time. Thank you!
